TRIBUTE TO JØRN UTZON - posted on the Jørn Utzon Sydney Opera House websiteMore Tributes
On 29th of November 2008, Jørn Utzon died at the age of ninety. His passing has been a trigger for a national outpouring of gratitude for his acclaimed design of the Sydney Opera House. This emotion, as this on of many tributes expresses is like a climax to the tragic story surrounding the conception, construction and recognition of this building. The hero, Utzon, never returned to Australia after being forced to resign due to lack of payment. This rift, between the building he is most well known for and its architect arguably heightens the dramatic narrative which accompanies this place. The personal identification people have with the Sydney Opera House is personal, internal; as Kathleen describes, "now when I see it, it feels like home, like a part of me."
